All too often, it feels like the designers of Fable: The Journey are leaning out from behind your TV screen with a wink and a nudge, begging you to be impressed: "It's like you're petting a horse! Cool, right? Right?" The same is true of the frequently repeated section where the hero cares for his horse by brushing dirt off its coat, filling a trough with water, and feeding it apples. It's only in the game because someone realized the Kinect camera could track that particular motion. Take, for instance, an early section where the player is asked to light five gas lamps: You have to reach into the air, make a fist like you're grabbing a chain, and pull down to light the lamp. This causes all kinds of problems.įirst of all, much of the game only seems to exist in order to show off the Kinect technology. It's bad because the entire game is designed to be used with Microsoft's motion-sensing Kinect camera, instead of a standard gamepad. Still, Fable: The Journey isn't bad because it does something different. The gameplay is completely linear, or "on rails." Your hero travels to a location, stops to shoot some stuff, travels to a new place, stops to shoot some stuff, and on and on with few diversions.

It takes place in Albion, which used to be a fun place to visit, but almost all of what was enjoyable is gone.
